Shutter Materials

There are many shutter materials to consider when purchasing shutters for your home or business. There are pros and cons to each material and there is no "perfect" shutter material. Depending on your needs and budget, though, you can narrow down the selection.

Cedar Shutters

Cedar shutters are probably the most popular outdoor wooden shutters. Cedar wood is so popular because it mills and finishes nicely and is extremely durable. Bugs hate cedar and cedar shutters resist decay and are ideal for areas of high moisture.

Faux Wood Shutters

Faux wood shutters are an affordable alternative to wooden shutters. The term "faux wood" is applied to any shutter that is not made out of actual wood. This includes the most low-quality, plastic shutters right up to high-quality synthetics.

Poly Shutters

Poly shutters are a kind of faux wood shutter made of synthetic materials. These shutters may be hollow or solid, functional or non-functional. High-quality poly shutters hold in more heat than wooden shutters and are much more attractive than cheap vinyl shutters.

Polywood Shutters

Polywood shutters are another synthetic wood substitute. Polywood is stronger than many plastic shutters and are more heat officiant than wooden shutters. Unlike vinyl shutters, polywood is completely paintable but not stainable like wood shutters are. Polywood shutters are durable and make a nice alternative to wood.

Vinyl Shutters

Vinyl shutters are usually used as non-functioning decorative shutters. Vinyl shutters are the least expensive shutters on the market and are available in most home improvement stores. There are very few style choices when purchasing vinyl shutters and they can look quite plastic.

Wood Shutters

Wood shutters are the traditional choice for shutters and are still very popular. Shutters made of wood are light, yet durable and are highly customizable. Wood can be used for interior or exterior shutters and can be functional or non-functional.
